According to the lawsuit, Sanchez was killed on December 27 after he hired Uber to take him and his friends home from downtown Miami. However, the Uber driver appeared to be falling asleep and was hit by another car as he took a left turn. Sanchez got trapped in the car while everyone else was able to get out before the vehicle exploded.
The family is suing Uber for failing to properly train the driver. The Uber driver, car owner, and the driver of the other car have also been named in the lawsuit.
The lawsuit, filed by the victim’s grandmother, claims that the event organizer, DaiZies, and the security firm, Southwest Florida Security & Investigations, failed to provide adequate security.
Attorney Charles “Kip” Sinclair, who is representing the plaintiffs, said, “You can’t let people come into a crowded area, drinking alcohol, waving toy guns and being in disguise and not expect something to go wrong.”
The lawsuit is seeking $5 million in damages, costs and attorney fees.
