Jury Awards $20.5 Million in Wrongful Death Suit Against Chaffey Joint Union High School District
Following the death of a 15-year old boy who was hit and killed by a car while crossing the 5-lane Duncan Canyon highway to reach school bus stop, a San Bernardino Superior Court jury has awarded $20,500,000 to his mother.
On December 6, 2010, Jin Ouk Burnham was crossing the highway in Fontana when a car struck him, causing serious injuries that resulted in his death 15 days later. His mother then filed a wrongful death suit against the vehicle driver as well as Chaffey Joint Union School District.
The lawsuit claimed that the school district violated state law by designing the bus stop in a way that forced students to cross a busy, 5-lane highway.
